Sobre nosotros

Hello, My name is Halley Vincent, and I am the founder of Seven Stories Bookshop in Shawnee, Kansas. While I do hold the title of America’s Youngest Bookstore Owner, this is not an honorary title, but a job I do, every day.

I am currently a Sophomore at Shawnee Mission North, with a part time schedule at Shawnee Mission East. That is to say, I have quite a unique schedule in comparison to both my classmates and other booksellers.

Problema

I opened Seven Stories in September of 2022 with just 97 square feet, and a mission to fulfil a gap in our community. After several years of running a free, community bookmobile that gave out free used books, I became aware that there weren't even ANY bookstores in Shawnee!!

With years of experience *slinging* books, I jumped into the world of bookselling. What I didn’t know was that 3 years later, the Brick n’ Mortar would still be in existence, and we would have moved several times, finally settling in a 1400sq ft space only a few blocks from home.

Solución

By opening Seven Stories, I didn’t just create a place to sell books, I built a sellable experience. Something that draws in a wide range of people and gives them a reason to come back.

In a world full of big box stores and online alternatives, indie bookstores can get pushed out of the picture.

Right now, as I prepare for Indie Bookstore Day (which is huge for shops like mine), Amazon is running its “Amazon Book Sale”—offering 80% off books for an entire week, conveniently timed to overlap with Indie Bookstore Day. For them, books are just a loss leader.

But what they can’t copy is experience. No online sale can beat what indie shops offer when it comes to community, connection, and creativity.

At Seven Stories, we host book clubs, birthday parties, and after-hours shopping events. We give personalized book recs, swap stories, and always make time for conversation. We show people that shopping locally isn’t just about buying a book. It’s about being part of something real.

Mercado objetivo

Our target audience includes readers and nonreaders of all ages throughout Shawnee and the greater Kansas City area.

Impacto social

This morning, as the Youngest Bookseller, I sat down for a phone call with Ms. Janet, who’s formally recognized as the Oldest Bookseller.

She said something that really stuck with me:

“When people say they want to give back to their community—no they don’t. What they want is to give back to the future development of their community.”

I’ve never heard it put better, and it’s exactly how I feel.

Between the bookmobile and the shop, I’ve spent the last seven years staying rooted in philanthropy. Seven Stories actually grew out of the Paws Up KC Bookmobile, which has been running for five years and gives out thousands of books each season (May through October). While the bookmobile and bookstore are separate, they often work hand in hand to source discounted, gently used titles to be given away in the community at no cost.

I also organize over a dozen events each year at the shop, many of which feature local organizations, raise awareness, and collect donations.

Próximos pasos

In December 2024, I relocated the bookstore to its third location.

I had 30 days to move and somehow reopen in time for holiday shopping. (Spoiler: we didn’t reopen until the end of December, missing Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and most of the holiday season that usually carries us through the slow months.)

To say November and December were rough would be an understatement. But I didn’t have time to slow down. I found a real estate attorney, signed with a real estate agent, and did my best to keep serving the KC book community.

When I say I’m in the Business Scale Up category… I mean it.

My storefront has doubled in size. Right now, my biggest challenge is inventory. In previous locations, I was turning over a third of my inventory every week. Which is AMAZING, but also exhausting. In this new space, I’m aiming for balance. I want things moving, but at a pace I can keep up with.

My top goals right now are securing funding to expand inventory and designing, printing, and installing both interior and exterior signage to make the shop even more welcoming and easier to navigate.
