Semester Challenge: How will my business ensure legal compliance?
Business Law students are challenged to develop and refine a pitch explaining how their selected business will ensure legal compliance. Each student has chosen a business connected to their personal interests, which will serve as the focus of their legal study throughout the semester. Any pitch that earns at least 20 tokens during the semester will receive a prize, allowing multiple students to succeed.
Through this process, students will strengthen their legal reasoning, business planning, and professional communication skills while engaging with real-world perspectives from community partners. Students are challenged to answer these four questions with their pitch:
Part 1:
Describe what your business is selling- products and/or services.
Given the product/service you are selling, what do you believe will be the best business structure? Why?
Part 2:
What facts about criminal and tort laws do professionals in your business/industry need to know?
Part 3:
What facts about contracts & intellectual property do professionals in your business/industry need to know?
Part 4:
What facts about employment & consumer laws do professionals in your business/industry need to know?
Sobre nosotros
I am a high school senior in a business law class. I love to bake. I have been baking for 3 years in my commercial baking class. I am planning on attending KU for either anthropology, History, or biology.
Problema
This business would be selling bookmarks, magnets, and cookbooks with vintage recipes and measurement conversions for common ingredients.
I believe the best business structure would be an LLC, to avoid any personal property being put in jeopardy.
Solución
Criminal law: Embezzlement
If someone I hire to help run my business steals money from me, then I need to know what to do.
I would have safety measures and be very picky about who has access to the business accounts.
Tort law: If a manufacturer uses lead dye in the products I am selling, that could cause problems.

Contract law: Minors are not able to sign contracts without a parent or guardian present to sign as well.
Intellectual property law: Anything you design is your intellectual property, like a logo or product design. THey are protected by copyright.

Employment Law: It is important to make sure that there is safety training and equipment when needed in the workplace
Consumer Law: It is important to make sure that your products do not include harmful chemicals, like lead.
