Semester Challenge: How will my business ensure legal compliance?
Business Law students are challenged to develop and refine a pitch explaining how their selected business will ensure legal compliance. Each student has chosen a business connected to their personal interests, which will serve as the focus of their legal study throughout the semester. Any pitch that earns at least 20 tokens during the semester will receive a prize, allowing multiple students to succeed.
Through this process, students will strengthen their legal reasoning, business planning, and professional communication skills while engaging with real-world perspectives from community partners. Students are challenged to answer these four questions with their pitch:
Part 1:
Describe what your business is selling- products and/or services.
Given the product/service you are selling, what do you believe will be the best business structure? Why?
Part 2:
What facts about criminal and tort laws do professionals in your business/industry need to know?
Part 3:
What facts about contracts & intellectual property do professionals in your business/industry need to know?
Part 4:
What facts about employment & consumer laws do professionals in your business/industry need to know?
À propos de nous
I've always enjoyed thrifting clothing, and when I started to meet some of the people in the vintage clothing industry around KCMO and talking to them about it, it sparked my interest in creating my own thrifted clothing business. And the more I got into it, I began to start playing around with refurbishing clothes and creating my own.
Problème
A sole proprietorship would work best for my business to start. As of now, that is what type of business structure it is, and it has been very easy for me to keep track of where the funds are going and keep track of profits. As my business grows more stable, it will most likely transition to a partnership/group, because of the expanding inventory and demand for the clothing.
My duty is to make sure that the clothing that I am making and reselling is of high quality and matches the description that I am selling them at. It's my duty to make sure that I am a trustworthy seller to people and that they can feel safe knowing my clothing is of good quality.
Solution
Theft and fraud are the most apparent criminal laws for my business. For online sales people have already tried to commit fraud when buying clothing from me. They try to dispute the charges once the item has been shipped. That's why I have to take pictures of all of the texts with the buying and of me dropping off the package with their shipping label. For in-person events like markets, I have to watch out for theft because of how easy it can be for someone to grab something off my rack or tables, because of the amount of clothing.
Marché cible
Under tort law, I must prevent harm to buyers. To lower the risk of rashes or irritation, I wash all clothing before shipping.
Contracts help my business grow. Bulk purchasing deals let me buy inventory cheaply, and agreements with local flea markets give me steady places to sell. For intellectual property, I use a logo I designed myself and avoid trademarked logos or protected designs.
Impact sociétal
Right now, I have no employees. If I add one or two people, I’d pay based on hours worked and the value they help create.
I protect consumers by listing every item honestly and matching what I promise on social media. Positive reviews matter to me because they show I’m a trustworthy seller.
With family law, I only involve my family when I have a clear plan, and I know who would step in if something happened to me or the business.
Prochaines étapes
I look to expand my business further, eventually launching my own website to increase my reach. I am also looking to grow my business to reach more people, hiring a couple of employees to increase the flow of clothing and distribute the workload.
Nos écoles et districts
Overall, I am constantly looking for ways to expand my business and increase the amount of inventory that I have.
