Semester Challenge: How will my business ensure legal compliance?
Business Law students are challenged to develop and refine a pitch explaining how their selected business will ensure legal compliance. Each student has chosen a business connected to their personal interests, which will serve as the focus of their legal study throughout the semester. Any pitch that earns at least 20 tokens during the semester will receive a prize, allowing multiple students to succeed.
Through this process, students will strengthen their legal reasoning, business planning, and professional communication skills while engaging with real-world perspectives from community partners. Students are challenged to answer these four questions with their pitch:
Part 1:
Describe what your business is selling- products and/or services.
Given the product/service you are selling, what do you believe will be the best business structure? Why?
Part 2:
What facts about criminal and tort laws do professionals in your business/industry need to know?
Part 3:
What facts about contracts & intellectual property do professionals in your business/industry need to know?
Part 4:
What facts about employment & consumer laws do professionals in your business/industry need to know?

I chose to create a lawn care business because I enjoy working outside, helping people, and making good money. I am a sophomore at Shawnee Mission South. I want to expand my business so that I have a company in 5 years.
Problème
My business is selling lawn care services. Given the service I'm selling, a sole proprietorship would be the best business structure because it is easiest to start. As a business owner, my duties include managing the business, providing lawn care services, customer service, equipment and safety, and marketing. My neglect could cause damage to customers' property, safety risks, financial and legal problems, and damage to my reputation.
Solution
Some criminal laws that people in lawn care need to know to avoid legal trouble include: property damage, fraud, workplace safety, and operating without a licence.

Lawn care professionals should know that clear written contracts help prevent disputes over services, payment, and liability, even when agreements seem informal. They should also understand that business names, logos, marketing materials, and customer lists are intellectual property that must be properly protected through agreements and confidentiality practices.

Professionals in the lawn care industry need to know that employment laws require proper worker classification, minimum wage compliance, overtime pay for non‑exempt employees, and adherence to workplace safety rules such as OSHA standards. They should also understand that consumer protection laws prohibit deceptive practices, require honest pricing and advertising, and often mandate clear cancellation, refund, and service‑quality terms. Failing to follow these laws can lead to fines, lawsuits, and loss of business licenses.
