Overview
Semester Challenge: How will my business ensure legal compliance?
Business Law students are challenged to develop and refine a pitch explaining how their selected business will ensure legal compliance. Each student has chosen a business connected to their personal interests, which will serve as the focus of their legal study throughout the semester.
Feedback will be accepted throughout the month of April. From April 20–27, students will publicly share their pitches to collect tokens. Any pitch that earns at least 20 tokens during the semester will receive a prize, allowing multiple students to succeed. Through this process, students will strengthen their legal reasoning, business planning, and professional communication skills while engaging with real-world perspectives from community partners.
About
I've always enjoyed thrifting clothing, and when I started to meet some of the people in the vintage clothing industry around KCMO and talking to them about it, it sparked my interest in creating my own thrifted clothing business. And the more I got into it, I began to start playing around with refurbishing clothes and creating my own.
Part 1:
A sole proprietorship would work best for my business to start. As of now, that is what type of business structure it is, and it has been very easy for me to keep track of where the funds are going and keep track of profits. As my business grows more stable, it will most likely transition to a partnership/group, because of the expanding inventory and demand for the clothing.
My duty is to make sure that the clothing that I am making and reselling is of high quality and matches the description that I am selling them at. It's my duty to make sure that I am a trustworthy seller to people and that they can feel safe knowing my clothing is of good quality.
Part 2:
Theft and fraud are the most apparent criminal laws for my business. For online sales people have already tried to commit fraud when buying clothing from me. They try to dispute the charges once the item has been shipped. That's why I have to take pictures of all of the texts with the buying and of me dropping off the package with their shipping label. For in-person events like markets, I have to watch out for theft because of how easy it can be for someone to grab something off my rack or tables, because of the amount of clothing.
