About
The Kansas City Mayor and City Council offices have teamed up together to provide an internship opportunity for aspiring young adults. City Council is an aspect of Kansas City's municipal government that works to provide solutions for the masses of our community. This involves working to implement ordinances, having committees designed to cover specific values to our community, and ensuring that all constituents around Kansas City are being heard.
Problem
As Kansas City has been growing at rapid rates over the past couple of years, so does our infrastructure. Kansas City wants to be able to have a growing infrastructure and also work toward energy efficiency for all buildings, which traditionally contradict each other.
Solution
To be able to have a growing community, we have to ensure we have affordable housing. This past Earth Day, Councilwoman Bough (6th district at-large) and a few of her colleagues introduced an ordinance that would adopt the IECC 21, which is a code that limits energy consumption for buildings to promote energy efficiency. This code increases the cost of building drastically, and increases the cost of homes by more than $30,000. Our job is to curb that cost. Our solution is to adopt the entire code, yet make it optional for the consumer, while also gaining data about the energy efficiency of the status quo by testing older homes.
Audience | Target Market
The target market is all builders, but most importantly residential home builders, as the code is very restrictive to them. This code also heavily effects home buyers as the price of houses increases at an alarming rate.
Learning Outcomes | Community Impact
Our solution is rooted in some of the essential values that we have as a country, which is the freedom to choose. Our solution allows for the consumer to choose whether or not that want they want an increase in cost and significantly more energy efficiency than the status quo.
Next Steps
To turn this solution to reality, it takes Councilwoman Bough to add our two amendments to the ordinance she introduced.
Reflection | Other Info
Our project has taught us a lot about research skills and how to reach out to to professionals in a mature manner.
Resource | Support Needs
We are not currently accepting contributions from our voters. This pitch is part of the ProX competition for $5,000. We would use the funding to promote our solution and invest in an even more energy efficient society.
