Competition Brief

Pitch your idea for the next big movie! Create a story that’s exciting, emotional, funny, or adventurous, and explain why people would love to watch it.

About

The film tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a banker wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. He is sentenced to two life sentences at Shawshank State Penitentiary.
Over nearly two decades, Andy navigates the brutal realities of prison life, forming a deep friendship with fellow inmate Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman).
The film explores themes of hope, perseverance, friendship, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Problem

Injustice and False Imprisonment:
Andy Dufresne is wrongly convicted of murder, forcing him to endure decades of imprisonment for a crime he didn't commit. This sets up the fundamental conflict: how does an innocent man survive within a system designed to break him?
The Dehumanizing Nature of Imprisonment:
The film explores the corrosive effects of long-term incarceration. Shawshank represents a system that strips individuals of their dignity, hope, and sense of self. The problem becomes: how does one maintain their humanity in such a dehumanizing environment?

Solution

Combating Injustice and False Imprisonment:
Andy's solution isn't about legal exoneration within the film's timeline. Instead, it's about maintaining his inner sense of justice and refusing to let the system define him.
He meticulously plans and executes his escape, reclaiming his freedom and exposing the warden's corruption. This serves as a form of personal justice.
Resisting Dehumanization:
Andy's solution lies in preserving his intellectual and emotional life. He maintains his dignity by:
Cultivating his mind through education.
Finding small acts of beauty and hope (like the music on the prison PA system).
Building meaningful connections with others, particularly Red.
His long term project of digging the tunnel is a massive act of mental fortitude.
